High Value Races (£100 or more) 1742
The table below lists the winners of all races worth £100 or more, showing whether the race was a Match usually run in heats, Sweepstake, Subscription Purse or Kings Plate, together with the racecourse, the winning racehorse and owner. Analysis of the data indicates the changing nature of races over time, from Matches run in heats, to single heat races which, in the early days, were Kings Plates, until Sweepstakes began to emerge and grab the attention of punters and bookmakers, and also provides an insight into the dominance of Newmarket prior to the 1740 Act of Parliament, through to 1750 and beyond, once thought to be the founding date of the modern day Jockey Club. | |||||
